History / Història

Our wedding venue is a 14th century manor house. It is popularly known at the Castle of Saint Gregory. The building was the main residence of the Margarit family of Saint Gregory during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. The Margarits were a very powerful family in Catalunya and had a very strong economic position in the society. Whilst they held noble titles, they were not part of the high nobility. They were instead knights with the right to use their coat of arms.

Two members of the family were of particualr significance:

  • Joan de Margarit was bishop of Girona became cardinal in Rome and continued to govern the diocese of Girona. He also acted as ambassador in Italy and took part in the Catalan Courts. He stayed in *el Castell* as the heir of the Margarit family and died in 1484.
  • Joan Margarit and Requesens, archdeacon of Girona, heir of the Margarit family was the ‘president’ of Catalunya 1521-1524.

After the lineage demise, the *castell* worked as a *masia* (a Catalan rural construction nearly always associated with a family farming or livestock operation) until the 20th century, when it was abandoned. It has fully been refurbished and maintains its original features and structure.

The journey from Girona centre to El Castell is only 19 minutes, and there is plenty of parking space at the venue.
